My toddler (16 months) doesn't understand completely yet.. it worked for 5 mins but took longer than other cups of choice. Definitely a learning process, hopefully it'll work out but it's not a waste because it's doubled as a nice drinking cup. Very sturdy as well nice weight to it. Side note- I don't know about the design is it a dog?, a lamb? a horse? The pink is cute
