The ends are very hard and it has a soft middle. there's a spot on the underside of it that's indented and meant for grip and maybe gum massage??? Not sure. It's an interesting toy. Our dog can tear a "tuff" toy up in a day or 2. These are much harder and she loves them. The only thing is I need to teach here to put her toys away as stepping on them is very painful. Put a little pain for her to have to much enjoyment is worth it.
