Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov, was the founder of Hasidic Judaism who healed a fractured people and set them on fire with divine love. How did a man who spent thirty-six years in hiding emerge to build a court in Medzhybizh, confront the Frankist heresy, and teach an entire generation to cleave to Heaven through ordinary joy?
The narrative begins in Tlust, when the Besht stepped from shadow into light and began his open work as a healer and master of the divine name. He established a fiery study hall in Medzhybizh, drawing scholars like Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Polonoye and the Maggid of Mezeritch Dov Ber who arrived as skeptics or equals and left as devoted heirs. As he traveled through Podolia and Volhynia, he democratized spiritual access, leaving tables of learned men to answer the questions of simple woodcutters and children. The account follows his celebrated soul ascent on Rosh Hashanah night, his unsuccessful attempts to reach the Land of Israel, and his fierce defense of the community against the heretic Jacob Frank. The record concludes on the final Shavuot of his life, as he calmly hands the succession to Dov Ber and prepares his disciples for a world without his physical presence.
