Hieromonk Seraphim Rose was an American Orthodox monk who co-founded the Saint Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina. How did the writings of a solitary monk in the California mountains reach the hearts of the faithful across the globe?
Pilgrims arriving at his grave in Platina encountered an atmosphere of peace and the fragrance of roses. As his manuscripts reached the faithful, works like Nihilism and Genesis, Creation and Early Man circulated as pastoral medicine for those struggling with the spiritual sickness of the age. The veneration of Seraphim grew across oceans, marked by icons painted in Byzantine, Russian, Georgian, and Serbian styles. His appeal reached lost Americans and unexpected heirs far beyond his own jurisdiction. The narrative traces this expanding legacy, leaving the reader beside the grave in the silent mountains of northern California where the monastery stands.
