The small ties at the ankles are helpful - which I specifically wanted some version of, as tying at the ankle helps in cold/snowy weather, and was what I loved about my former version of these pants that I wore out (but had for at least 5 years). The small ties at the end of the pant legs create versatility as one can leave loose or tight (if you want extra weather protection). Thus, great pair for year round, but extra helpful in winter for the COLD temperatures. Also great for my long walks/bike rides because of multiple different types of pockets.
