About this item

Product details

The Origins of Turkish Towels
Turkish towels trace their roots back to the Ottoman Empire, which spanned parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa from the 14th to the early 20th century. Known for their appreciation of luxury, the Ottomans placed great value on textiles. Turkish towels, also called peshtemal or hammam towels, were traditionally used in Turkish baths to cover the body while changing and to dry off after bathing.

Originally handwoven from 100% cotton, these towels were prized for being lightweight, quick-drying, and versatile enough to double as wraps, shawls, or scarves.

The Evolution of Turkish Towels
Over time, Turkish towels evolved from bathhouse essentials into symbols of status and craftsmanship. By the 17th century, they had become key products in the Ottoman economy and were exported across Europe and the Middle East.

Their uses expanded to include furniture covers, tablecloths, and even, at times, forms of currency. The more intricate the design, the more highly valued the towel.

Modern-Day Popularity
Today, Turkish towels are celebrated for their blend of beauty and practicality. Lightweight, absorbent, and fast-drying, they’re ideal for the beach, gym, or travel. Their compact size makes them easy to pack, and they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns to suit any style.

Highly versatile, they can also be used as picnic blankets, couch throws, or tablecloths. Made from natural materials and free from harmful chemicals, they’re an eco-friendly choice as well.
