They're easy to rinse off with water when I need to and then dry, which was the main reason I purchased this specific type or mat. If you like to have your elbows and arms on the table, you won't like this mat.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and design of these placemats. At first, I was put off by the price, but they only come in a six-pack, so when broken down, it was only about $1 more than the less expensive variety sold in the store. They look expensive and fancy, but in reality are just as easy to care for as the vinyl variety. In fact, I got some of the vinyl ones last visit to the store, and they were terrible: Curled up around a hot plate, so what's the point? They are going back. There is none of that with these place mats. I'm pleased as can be and very happy with the purchase.
