It's pretty thin material (but not see through) and I'd say it runs a little smaller than normal size. It is stretchy thankfully, but I have tall and skinny kids, and this was tighter on them. Would definitely recommend sizing up, especially if you have a thicker kid. I used these for a hand print fabric ink project with my kids, and it worked for that (but if painting, would highly suggest using cardboard behind what ever side your painting on because the fabric ink paint leaked through. The cardboard I used between layers inside the shirt took a lot of paint). I have not washed them yet to see if they shrink. Would also suggest sizing up for that reason too.
