Getting started with sprouting seeds indoors is straightforward. You'll need a sprouting kit or tray, clean water, and your preferred seeds like alfalfa or broccoli.

1. First, rinse your seeds thoroughly to remove any debris.
2. Spread them evenly in your sprouting tray or jar.
3. Add water according to the kit's instructions, making sure trays or jars drain properly to prevent excess moisture.
4. Place the setup in a spot with indirect light and a stable temperature.

Most kits include detailed directions, so follow those for best results. Be patient—most sprouts are ready in a few days!

Cleaning your sprouting trays helps maintain freshness and keep your sprouts healthy.

• After each batch, rinse trays with warm water and a mild dish soap.
• Use a soft brush to remove any stuck-on residue.
• Rinse thoroughly to wash away soap.
• Let trays air dry completely before use.

Some trays may be dishwasher safe—check the product instructions first. Regular cleaning minimizes the risk of mold or residue buildup, so it’s a good habit to stick to for fresh sprouts each time.

Many sprouting kits are adaptable for microgreens, depending on tray depth and design. Microgreens typically need more room for growth and may require a shallow layer of soil or a soil-free medium.

• Check your kit's trays for sufficient depth.
• Follow instructions for microgreens, which usually involve spreading seeds evenly and misting regularly.
• If your kit is labeled for sprouts only, stick to provided directions for those seeds.

Microgreens take longer to grow than sprouts, so expect a slightly different process.

The growth time for sprouts varies based on the seeds and environmental conditions.

• Common seeds like alfalfa usually sprout in 3–5 days.
• Others, such as mung beans, may take 5–7 days.

Factors like temperature, humidity, and light can affect growth rates. Keep your tray in indirect sunlight and maintain proper moisture levels for the best results. Always refer to your kit's instructions and seed packaging for more specific timelines.

For sprouting, it's best to use seeds that are labeled specifically for sprouting or microgreens. These are usually untreated, non-GMO, and safe for consumption.

• Don’t use seeds intended for garden planting, as they may be coated with chemicals.
• Check packaging for terms like “sprouting,” “microgreens,” or “food grade.”
