Solid spoons and slotted spoons serve different kitchen tasks. Solid spoons are great for stirring, mixing, and serving foods that have sauces or liquids, since they don’t let anything drain through. Slotted spoons have holes or slots, making them perfect for lifting foods out of liquids, like vegetables from boiling water or fried foods from oil. Choosing between them depends on what you’re cooking—solid spoons are ideal for soups and batters, while slotted spoons help separate food from excess liquid.

Yes, you can use a solid spoon on nonstick cookware, but it’s best to choose one made from silicone, nylon, or wood.

• Silicone and nylon spoons are gentle on nonstick surfaces and help prevent scratches.
• Wooden spoons are also safe and won’t damage the coating.

Cleaning your solid cooking spoon depends on its material:

• Silicone and nylon spoons are usually dishwasher safe—just check the label to be sure.
• Wooden spoons should be hand washed with mild soap and warm water, then dried right away to prevent cracking or warping.
• Stainless steel spoons can typically go in the dishwasher, but hand washing helps maintain their shine.

The right size solid spoon depends on your cooking needs.

• Standard sizes range from about 10 to 14 inches in length.
• Longer spoons (12–14 inches) are great for stirring large pots or deep pans.
• Shorter spoons (10–12 inches) work well for everyday tasks like mixing or serving.

Many solid spoons are designed to be heat resistant, but it depends on the material.

• Silicone and stainless steel spoons often withstand high temperatures, making them suitable for cooking and stirring hot foods.
• Nylon spoons are heat resistant up to a point, but it’s best to avoid leaving them in very hot pans for extended periods.
• Wooden spoons handle heat well but should not be left resting in hot pots.
