Great question! In gardening, soil (singular) refers to the material itself—what plants grow in. Soils (plural) means different kinds of soil or growing mixes.

• Use "soil" when you’re talking about the substance in general.
• Use "soils" when comparing types or shopping categories.

On this page, “soils” covers a range of options, including:

• Potting mix for containers and houseplants.
• Garden soil for in-ground beds.
• Topsoil for leveling or building up areas.
• Raised bed mixes for planters and boxes.
• Seed-starting mix for germinating seeds.
• Amendments like compost, peat moss, perlite, or biochar to improve structure and drainage.

Urea supplies nitrogen, and as it breaks down in soil, microbes convert it to ammonium and then nitrate. Those processes can release acidity, which may gradually lower soil pH, especially with frequent applications and rainfall or irrigation.

• Impact varies with application rate, soil type, organic matter, and starting pH.
• Test your soil pH before and during the growing season to track changes.
• Where appropriate, pH adjustments (like adding lime) can help balance acidity based on test results.
• In containers, flush the mix occasionally to reduce salt buildup, as directed.

Always follow product labels for safe use. These steps can help maintain healthy conditions, but results vary by climate and soil.

Here, “soils” is a catch-all for growing media and amendments you can use around the yard and in containers. Each serves a different purpose:

• Potting mix: Lightweight, well-draining blend for planters and indoor pots.
• Garden soil: Formulated for in-ground beds; helps enrich native soil.
• Topsoil: General-purpose soil for filling, leveling, and base layers.
• Raised bed soil: Balanced mix for deep planters and boxes.
• Seed-starting mix: Fine, airy medium that supports germination.
• Amendments: Compost, peat moss, perlite, and similar materials that improve structure, drainage, and water retention.

Check packaging for “for in-ground use” or “for containers” to match the product to your project.

Both are useful, but they’re designed for different jobs:

• Potting mix: Best for containers. It’s lighter, drains well, and provides air space for roots. Using dense garden soil in pots can compact and hold too much water.
• Garden soil: Best for in-ground beds. It’s blended to mix with native soil and help improve structure and nutrients.
• Raised beds: Use a raised-bed blend, or layer a mix of topsoil and compost with some aeration material when appropriate.
• Seeds: Start seeds in a seed-starting mix, then transplant into potting mix or the garden.

Always read the label for intended use and application tips.

A quick estimate helps you plan your project:

1. Measure length × width × depth (in feet) to get total cubic feet.
2. Check bag volume on the label (e.g., 0.75, 1, or 1.5 cu ft, or quarts for potting mix).
3. Divide total cubic feet by the bag’s volume to estimate the number of bags.
4. For round pots, approximate volume with 3.14 × (radius in feet)² × height.
5. Add 10–15% for settling and surface leveling.

Example: A 4 ft × 2 ft × 1 ft bed ≈ 8 cu ft. With 1.5 cu ft bags, plan around 6 bags. Compressed bales list expanded volume—use that number. Estimates can vary with moisture and compaction.
