To calibrate a digital kitchen scale, start by placing the scale on a flat, stable surface. Turn it on and let it zero out. Most digital scales have a 'calibrate' or 'mode' button—press and hold it until the display shows 'CAL' or a similar prompt. Place a known calibration weight (often included or specified in the manual) on the center of the platform. Wait for the scale to register the weight, then follow any on-screen instructions to complete the process. Always check your user manual for model-specific steps, as calibration methods can vary.

Inconsistent readings can happen for several reasons.

• Make sure the scale is on a level, hard surface—soft or uneven spots can affect accuracy.
• Check that the scale is clean and free from debris under the platform.
• Low batteries can also cause erratic results, so replace them if needed.
• Allow the scale to zero out before each use.

While it's best to use a certified calibration weight for accuracy, some people use household items with known weights, like unopened canned goods or coins, as a temporary solution. However, these items may not be precise, so results can vary. For the most reliable calibration, refer to your scale's manual and consider purchasing a calibration weight designed for your scale's capacity.

How often you calibrate depends on how frequently you use your scale and the manufacturer's recommendations. For regular home use, calibrating every few months or after moving the scale to a new location can help maintain accuracy. If you notice unusual readings or after changing the batteries, it's a good idea to recalibrate. Always consult your user manual for specific guidance related to your model.

If your scale isn’t calibrating, try these steps:

1. Check that the batteries are fresh and properly installed.
2. Ensure the scale is on a flat, stable surface.
3. Remove any objects or debris from the weighing platform.
4. Follow the calibration steps in your manual carefully.
