Resetting car codes using an OBD2 scanner clears the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in your vehicle’s computer. This process can turn off warning lights like the check engine light, but it doesn’t fix the underlying issue. Here’s what happens when you reset codes:

• The vehicle’s computer erases stored error codes and resets system monitors.
• Any emissions or readiness monitors may need to be re-evaluated, which usually requires driving the car for a period.
• It’s a helpful step after repairs, but if the problem isn’t fixed, the codes may return.

Always address the root cause of any warning light for safe driving.

Using a code reader or OBD2 scanner to reset codes is straightforward. Here’s a general guide:

1. Plug the code reader into your car’s OBD2 port (usually under the dashboard).
2. Turn the ignition to the "on" position without starting the engine.
3. Follow the scanner’s prompts to read and clear codes.
4. After clearing, check if the warning light turns off.

Always consult your vehicle’s manual or the scanner’s instructions for details. Clearing codes doesn’t repair the issue, so it’s important to fix any detected problems first.

After clearing codes with a diagnostic tool, it’s recommended to drive your car for at least 50 to 100 miles over several driving cycles. This allows the vehicle’s onboard computer to:

• Re-run self-tests and reset readiness monitors.
• Detect if any issues remain or if the repair was successful.

Driving in varied conditions (city and highway) helps the system complete its checks. If the warning light comes back on, further diagnosis may be needed.

Most vehicles made after 1996 support OBD2 scanners for reading and resetting codes. However, compatibility can vary based on:

• The make, model, and year of your vehicle.
• The features of the code reader or diagnostic tool.

Some advanced functions like resetting specific service lights or performing system resets may require specialized tools. Always check your scanner’s compatibility with your car before use.

Resetting codes can temporarily clear warning lights, but it also resets your car’s readiness monitors. This means:

• Your vehicle may not pass an emissions or state inspection until it completes its self-checks.
• It’s best to drive your car for several days after resetting codes to allow all monitors to reset.

If you’re preparing for an inspection, make sure the underlying issue is fixed and all readiness monitors show as complete before scheduling your appointment.
