Most folks simply call it a volume knob, but replacement parts often use a few different names. If you’re browsing options, you may see:

• Volume knob or audio control knob (main loudness)
• Tune/tuner knob or selector knob (station/menu)
• Multi-function knob (turn + press for menus)
• Rear audio control knob (for rear-seat audio panels)
• Push-on knob or set-screw knob (how it attaches)
• D-shaft or splined/knurled shaft knob (shaft style)

For a smoother purchase, compare the shaft style, size, and location (front or rear controls), and check the compatibility details on the product page for your vehicle and stereo type.

The small buttons you press to save or select stations are commonly called preset buttons. On some product pages, you might also see them listed as pushbuttons or faceplate buttons. They’re different from round control knobs (volume/tune).

• Preset buttons: quick access to saved AM/FM stations
• Pushbuttons: general term for the same parts
• Button caps: the outer covers you touch

When replacing, it can help to match the button’s shape, color/finish, and spacing, then confirm fit by model-year and radio style in the item description and photos. Some kits include both knobs and pushbuttons for a consistent look.

CB radios typically use several knobs, each with a specific job. Common controls include:

• Volume: adjusts loudness of the speaker
• Squelch: reduces background hiss when no signal is present
• RF Gain: controls receiver sensitivity to weaker signals
• Channel selector: changes channels (often a detented knob)
• Clarifier/Fine tune: fine-adjusts receive frequency for clearer voices
• Mic gain: sets microphone input level

If you’re replacing a knob, compare shaft type (D-shaft or knurled), diameter, and indicator style. You may also see bracket knobs for mounting hardware, which tighten or loosen the radio’s bracket. Checking the product photos and fit notes can help you pick the right piece.

Most car stereo knobs use one of two mechanisms:

• Potentiometer (analog): turning the knob changes electrical resistance, which the radio reads for volume or tone. Movement is smooth and continuous.
• Rotary encoder (digital): the knob sends pulses to the radio’s processor. You’ll often feel gentle “clicks” (detents), and many also support a push-to-select function.

When replacing a knob, try to match the shaft style (D-shaft, splined/knurled, or round with set screw), attachment method (push-on vs. set screw), and insert size. Press knobs on straight and avoid forcing; for set-screw styles, tighten lightly. These steps can help the new knob feel secure and responsive.

1. Power off: Turn off the vehicle and stereo. If you’re working around trim, consider disconnecting the battery as a precaution.
2. Remove old knob: Pull straight out. If it’s stuck, protect the faceplate with a cloth and use a plastic trim tool to ease it off.
3. Match the shaft: Align the new knob with the flat side (D-shaft), splines, or the hole for a set screw.
4. Attach: Press on gently until seated, or tighten the set screw snugly—don’t overtighten.
5. Test: Turn and, if applicable, press the knob to confirm smooth operation.

Some kits include trim caps or sleeves—install those per the product instructions. If removal requires faceplate disassembly, consult your vehicle or stereo manual.
