A pie bird is a small ceramic tool that helps vent steam while your pie bakes. By placing it in the center of your pie before adding the top crust, the pie bird allows steam to escape through its hollow center. This can help prevent the filling from bubbling over and keeps the crust from getting soggy. Using a pie bird can make your pies look and taste better by promoting even baking and reducing mess in your oven.

1. Roll out your bottom pie crust and place it in your pie dish.
2. Set the pie bird upright in the center of the crust.
3. Add your filling around the pie bird, making sure it stays upright.
4. Place the top crust over the filling and pie bird, then cut a small slit so the bird's head pokes through.
5. Seal and crimp the edges as usual, then bake as directed. The pie bird will vent steam during baking, helping your pie crust stay crisp.

Yes, pie birds are designed to be reusable. Most are made from ceramic or porcelain, which makes them durable and easy to clean. After baking, let the pie bird cool, then wash it with warm, soapy water. Some pie birds are also dishwasher safe, but it's a good idea to check the packaging or product details for specific care instructions. With proper cleaning, your pie bird can be used for many baking sessions.

Pie birds work best with double-crust pies, where both a bottom and top crust are used. They're especially helpful for fruit pies, which tend to release a lot of steam and juices during baking. While you can use a pie bird with other types of pies, it's not usually needed for single-crust or open-faced pies. Always make sure the pie bird is placed securely before baking for best results.
