Using an OBD2 scanner is pretty simple. First, locate your car’s OBD2 port—it’s usually under the dashboard. Plug in your scanner and turn the ignition on (engine off or running, depending on your scanner’s instructions). Follow the prompts on the device to read engine codes. Many scanners let you clear codes, check live data, or test I/M readiness. Always consult your user manual for specifics, and remember to drive safely when testing any features.

Most OBD2 scanners are designed for vehicles built after 1996, which have standardized OBD2 ports. However, compatibility can vary for older or specialty vehicles. It’s a good idea to check your car’s manufacturing year and the scanner’s supported protocols before purchasing. If you’re unsure, look for compatibility lists or consult the product info to confirm your vehicle is covered.

• I/M Readiness: This feature shows if your vehicle’s emission systems are ready for inspection. If any monitors aren’t ready, your car might not pass state emissions tests.
• DTC Lookup: DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code. The lookup function helps you identify what the code means, so you can better understand any potential issues.

Both tools make diagnostics easier for everyday drivers by simplifying technical jargon.

Bluetooth OBD2 scanners connect wirelessly to your phone or tablet, usually through a dedicated app. Wired scanners, on the other hand, plug directly into the vehicle’s port and display results on their built-in screens. Both types can read codes and provide live data, but Bluetooth models offer more mobility and often additional features, like sharing results digitally. Choose whichever suits your workflow best.

1. Review the code using the DTC lookup feature.
2. Read the description—sometimes it's a minor issue, other times it may need attention.
3. Take note of any symptoms your vehicle is showing.
4. If you’re comfortable, check your car's manual or consult a trusted mechanic for advice.

Clearing the code may remove the warning, but it’s important to address underlying issues for long-term reliability.
