Most meal prepped foods can be safely stored in the refrigerator for about 3 to 5 days. To help maintain freshness and safety, use airtight containers and label them with the prep date.

• Store cooked proteins, grains, and vegetables separately when possible.
• Keep your fridge at or below 40°F (4°C).
• If you’re not planning to eat meals within 3 to 5 days, consider freezing them for longer storage.

Always check for changes in smell, texture, or appearance before eating, and when in doubt, it’s best to discard the food.

The 3-3-3 rule is a simple guideline for meal prepping variety and safety. It suggests prepping 3 proteins, 3 veggies, and 3 carbs for the week. This approach helps you mix and match ingredients to create different meals, keeping things interesting and balanced.

• Choose proteins like chicken, tofu, or beans.
• Pick a variety of vegetables, both raw and cooked.
• Include carbs such as rice, pasta, or potatoes.

This rule isn’t strict—feel free to adjust based on your preferences and dietary needs.

The best time to start meal prepping depends on your schedule and routine. Many people find it helpful to prep meals on weekends, like Sunday afternoons, so they’re set for the week ahead.

• Pick a day when you have a couple of free hours.
• Plan your meals and grocery list in advance.
• Prep and portion meals into containers for easy grab-and-go options.

Starting at a consistent time each week can make meal prepping a smooth part of your routine.

Keeping meal prep containers organized can make your week much easier.

• Stack containers by size and shape to save space.
• Use labels or dry-erase markers to note what’s inside and the prep date.
• Store lids separately in a basket or drawer to avoid clutter.
• Designate a specific shelf in your fridge for meal prepped foods.

Choosing containers that nest or stack well can also help keep your kitchen tidy and efficient.
