A matted frame is a picture frame that includes a border, called a mat, which surrounds your photo or artwork inside the frame. The mat is usually made of thick paper or cardboard and creates a visual space between the image and the frame edge. This helps highlight your picture and can protect it from touching the glass. Matted frames are popular for giving photos a polished, gallery-style look and can help fit smaller images into larger frames for more flexibility in your home decor.

When a frame is described as "matted," it means there's a separate border (the mat) placed around your photo or artwork inside the frame.

• Purpose: The mat adds style and draws attention to the image.
• Protection: It keeps the photo from directly touching the glass, which can help prevent sticking or damage over time.
• Customization: Mats come in different colors and sizes, so you can personalize your display to match your space or style.

An unmatted frame is a picture frame that doesn't include a mat border.

• Your photo or artwork fits the frame's full size, so there's no extra border between the image and the frame edge.
• This style gives a more modern, streamlined look and is great if you want your picture to fill the entire frame.
• Unmatted frames can be ideal for posters, large prints, or when you want to keep things simple and bold.

The correct term is "mat frame." In the world of picture framing, "mat" refers to the paper or cardboard border inside the frame. "Matt" is often a misspelling or can refer to a non-glossy finish in other contexts, but for frames, always look for "mat" when searching or shopping. So, if you're looking for a frame with a border around your photo, ask for a matted frame or a frame with a mat.

Choosing the right mat size depends on the look you want and the size of your photo.

1. Measure your photo: Know the exact dimensions (like 5x7 or 8x10 inches).
2. Decide on the frame size: Mats let you use a larger frame for a smaller photo, creating a border effect.
3. Choose mat width: Common mat borders are 1-3 inches wide, but you can go wider for a more dramatic look.

Try laying your photo on different mat sizes to see which style you like best before framing.
