When picking a pen for grading, most people look for features that boost comfort and clarity. Here are a few things to consider:

• Ink color: Bright colors like red or green stand out, making feedback easy to spot.
• Comfort grip: A soft, cushioned grip can be a real help during long grading sessions.
• Quick-dry ink: Smudge-resistant ink keeps pages neat and readable.
• Retractable tips or caps: These features prevent accidental marks when the pen isn't in use.

Choosing based on these factors can make grading smoother and less tiring.

Erasable pens can be helpful for teachers who like the flexibility of making clean corrections. Here are a few benefits:

• Easy editing: Mistakes or changes can be erased without the mess of correction fluid.
• Smooth writing: Most erasable pens offer a comfortable, consistent flow.
• Multiple colors: They often come in assorted shades, letting you organize notes or feedback.

Just remember, erasable ink may fade over time, so they’re best for temporary notes rather than permanent records.

To help your grading pens stay in top shape, try these tips:

• Store pens horizontally: This helps the ink distribute evenly and prevents clogs.
• Recap or retract tips: Always close the pen when not in use to prevent drying.
• Avoid extreme temperatures: Keep pens away from heat or cold, as this can affect ink flow.

With a bit of care, you can help extend the life of your grading pens and keep your writing smooth.

For grading, colors that contrast with black or blue ink—commonly used by students—tend to be most visible. Here’s what works well:

• Red: Classic for grading, bright and eye-catching on most paper.
• Green or purple: Both offer strong contrast and are less intimidating to some students.
• Bright pink or orange: These also pop, but make sure they're not too pale to read easily.

Choosing a color that's easy to see helps both you and your students during feedback.

Gel pens and ballpoints handle differently, so here’s a quick comparison:

• Gel pens: Use water-based gel ink, which provides vibrant colors and smooth writing, but may take a moment to dry.
• Ballpoint pens: Have oil-based ink, offering quick drying and durability, ideal if you’re working quickly or on the go.

The best choice depends on your preference for ink feel, color intensity, and drying time. Both work well for grading, but it helps to try each to see what suits you best.
