Fish traps are commonly referred to as minnow traps, bait traps, or foldable fishing nets. These devices are designed to catch small fish, shrimp, crawfish, and crabs. You’ll find a variety of styles, including collapsible cages and mesh baskets, each suited for different types of aquatic life. If you’re shopping for one, look for features like easy folding, durable materials, and multiple entry holes to help improve your catch rate.

Choosing the right bait can make a big difference.

• Bread and corn are popular for minnows.
• Chicken liver or fish scraps attract crawfish and crabs.
• Dog food or cat food pellets are easy and effective for many small fish.

Many fish have adapted to low-light environments and can see reasonably well at night. Their vision relies on specialized cells that help them detect movement and shapes in the dark. However, visibility can depend on water clarity and the species you’re targeting. If you’re using a fish trap after sunset, consider adding a small glow stick or reflective material to help attract fish, but always check local regulations before using lights.

Using a foldable fish trap is simple:

1. Unfold the trap and secure any latches or ropes.
2. Place bait inside, ideally in the center.
3. Lower the trap into the water, ensuring it’s fully submerged.
4. Attach the rope to a secure spot on shore or your boat.
5. Check the trap periodically and release unwanted catches safely.

To keep your fish trap in good shape, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water after each use.

• Remove any debris or leftover bait.
• Let it air dry completely before storing.
• For mesh traps, gently scrub with a soft brush if needed.
