A fish bat is a tool anglers use to quickly and humanely dispatch caught fish. They're typically made from materials like aluminum or wood and feature a comfortable grip for easy handling. Fish bats help ensure the fish is handled safely and efficiently, especially if you plan to keep your catch. Using a fish bat can also make cleaning and preparing the fish easier. Always follow local fishing regulations and handle all equipment with care to ensure a safe and enjoyable fishing experience.

The term "fishing priest" comes from the traditional use of this tool in angling. Historically, anglers referred to the fish bat as a "priest" because it was used to administer the "last rites" to a fish, meaning it was used to humanely end the fish's life. The name is still used today, especially in fly fishing circles. While the term might sound unusual, it simply refers to the tool's purpose in responsible fishing practices.

Fish bats are generally safe when used correctly and responsibly. Here are some tips for safe use:

• Always grip the handle firmly to prevent slipping.
• Use the bat only for its intended purpose—dispatching fish humanely.
• Keep the bat away from children and store it securely when not in use.
• Be mindful of your surroundings to avoid accidental injury.

Following these guidelines can help make your fishing experience safer and more enjoyable.

Cleaning your fish bat helps maintain its condition and hygiene. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Rinse the bat with fresh water to remove any fish residue or salt.
2. Wipe it down with a mild soap if needed, then rinse thoroughly.
3. Dry the bat completely with a towel to prevent rust or corrosion, especially if it’s metal.
4. Store it in a dry place until your next trip.

Regular cleaning can help extend the life of your fishing gear.

Fish bats are versatile tools suitable for many fishing situations, including freshwater and saltwater fishing. They're most commonly used when you plan to keep your catch and want to handle fish humanely. However, they may not be necessary for catch-and-release fishing. Always check local regulations, as some areas may have specific rules about equipment. Choosing the right fish bat depends on the size of fish you target and your personal preference for material and grip style.
