Drawstring curtains are often referred to as drawstring panel curtains or rod pocket curtains with drawstrings. These curtains feature a sewn-in channel at the top where a drawstring or cord is threaded, allowing you to easily gather and adjust the fabric for your desired look. This style is popular for its simple installation and customizable fullness, making it a versatile choice for living rooms, bedrooms, or even as decorative room dividers. You’ll find them in a variety of materials, from sheer voile to heavier fabrics, to suit different privacy and light-filtering needs.

Some curtain styles have fallen out of favor in recent years. Here are a few to consider avoiding if you want a modern look:

• Heavy, ornate swags and valances – These can make a space feel dated and overly formal.
• Ruffled or lace-trimmed curtains – While lace can be charming, excessive ruffles or frills may not suit contemporary decor.
• Bold, busy prints from past decades – Retro patterns can be fun, but too much can overwhelm a room.

Instead, many shoppers prefer simple, clean lines and neutral or soft colors for a fresh, updated style.

Curtains that hang from clips are commonly known as clip ring curtains or curtain panel clips. These use small rings with attached clips that slide along the curtain rod, making it easy to open, close, or swap out your panels. This style is great for lightweight fabrics like sheers or cotton and offers a relaxed, casual look. Clip ring curtains are also handy if you want to adjust the length or quickly change your window treatments without sewing or special hardware.

Martha Stewart is known for her creative home solutions and sometimes opts for alternatives to traditional curtains. Some popular options include:

• Sheer panels for a light, airy feel
• Roman shades for a tailored look
• Woven blinds for texture and natural light control

These alternatives can help you achieve privacy and style without heavy drapes. If you’re looking for a softer look, layering sheer drawstring curtains with blinds or shades is a popular approach seen in many design inspirations.

Measuring for drawstring curtains is simple with a few steps:

1. Measure the width of your window and add 6-12 inches on each side for fullness and coverage.
2. Decide how long you want the curtains to hang—either to the sill, below the sill, or to the floor.
3. Check the product description for panel dimensions, as drawstring curtains often come in sets.

Remember to consider the height of your curtain rod and any desired pooling at the bottom. Accurate measurements help ensure your curtains fit well and look great in your space.
