Cuttlefish bone is a popular accessory for pet birds because it serves several helpful purposes. Birds use cuttlebone to:

• Grind and trim their beaks, which helps prevent overgrowth and keeps their beaks healthy.
• Supplement their diet with calcium, supporting strong bones and eggshell production.
• Provide enrichment and entertainment, as chewing on cuttlebone can help reduce boredom.

Many bird owners attach cuttlebone to the cage, making it easy for birds to access whenever they need it.

Despite the name, cuttlefish bone isn’t a true bone. It’s actually the internal shell of a cuttlefish, a type of marine animal related to squids and octopuses. This shell, called a cuttlebone, is made mostly of calcium carbonate and has a unique, lightweight structure. Because it’s natural and packed with minerals, it’s commonly used as a chew toy and calcium source for birds, reptiles, and some small pets.

Yes, cuttlefish bone is generally considered safe for many pets, including birds, reptiles, and some small animals. Here are a few tips for safe use:

• Always supervise your pet when introducing any new accessory.
• Secure the cuttlebone to the cage or enclosure to prevent it from falling.
• Check regularly for sharp edges or excessive wear and replace as needed.

If you have concerns about your specific pet, it’s a good idea to consult a veterinarian for personalized advice.

Choosing the right size cuttlefish bone depends on your pet’s species and size. Here’s what to consider:

• For small birds (like budgies or finches), opt for smaller or thinner pieces.
• Larger birds (such as parrots or cockatiels) and reptiles may benefit from bigger, thicker cuttlebones.
• Make sure the cuttlebone fits securely in the cage and is easy for your pet to reach.

When in doubt, you can start with a medium size and observe how your pet interacts with it.

Most cuttlefish bones come with a metal holder or clip to make attachment easy. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Use the provided holder or a cage-safe clip to secure the cuttlebone to the bars of your pet’s cage.
2. Position it at a comfortable height so your pet can reach it easily.
3. Check regularly to ensure it remains securely fastened and replace if it becomes loose or worn.

This setup helps your pet safely enjoy the benefits of cuttlebone while keeping their environment tidy.
