Crankbaits are hard baits designed to imitate baitfish or crawfish and trigger reaction strikes. A molded bill or lip helps them dive and wobble when retrieved.

• Search tool: Cover water quickly to locate active fish.
• Reaction bites: The wobble and flash can prompt strikes from fish that aren’t feeding.
• Depth coverage: Different models reach shallow, mid, or deep zones.
• Deflection: Square bills can bounce off wood or rock to help avoid snags.

They’re commonly used in freshwater for species like bass and walleye, and come in styles such as squarebill, lipless, and deep-diving crankbaits.

A steady reel is a good start, but mixing it up often helps.

1. Cast beyond your target and reel until the lure reaches its running depth.
2. Vary speed; add brief pauses or accelerations to change the lure’s cadence.
3. Let it tick bottom or deflect off cover when conditions allow.
4. Use rod sweeps to create wider surges, then return to a steady retrieve.
5. Match line to the situation: fluorocarbon sinks and transmits feel; monofilament offers buoyancy and stretch.

Adjustments based on water clarity, temperature, and fish activity can make a noticeable difference.

Crankbaits attract a range of freshwater fish, depending on size and depth.

• Bass: Shallow squarebills around cover or deeper divers offshore.
• Crappie and panfish: Ultra-light or mini crankbaits on small waters.
• Walleye: Mid to deep divers along points and drop-offs.
• Trout: Slim crankbaits in streams and reservoirs.
• Pike: Larger profiles with sturdy hooks can withstand aggressive strikes.

Matching the lure’s profile and running depth to local forage and conditions tends to improve results, but success varies by location and season.

Both are hard baits, but they fish differently.

• Action: Crankbaits have a built-in wobble on a steady retrieve; jerkbaits move with twitches and pauses.
• Diving: Crankbaits use a bill to reach defined depths; many jerkbaits suspend or run slightly shallower.
• Where they shine: Crankbaits cover water and deflect off cover; jerkbaits excel in clear water or when fish are suspended.
• Profile: Crankbaits are often round or square; jerkbaits are slender and minnow-like.

Choosing between them can depend on season, water clarity, and how active fish are.

Think about where you’re fishing and what fish are feeding on.

• Depth: Shallow squarebills for bank cover, medium divers for mid-range, deep divers for offshore structure. Product pages usually list running depths.
• Size and profile: Match common forage—smaller shad for panfish or trout, larger baitfish for bass or pike.
• Sound and action: Rattling models can help in stained water; silent versions may suit clear conditions.
• Cover: Lipless styles can rip through grass; billed baits help deflect off wood or rock.
