Choosing the right engine coolant can depend on your vehicle's make, model, and the manufacturer's recommendations. Check your owner's manual for specifics on the type and requirements. Many coolants are formulated for all vehicles, but some are made for specific car types, like imports or older models. If you're unsure, look for universal coolants that are compatible with a wide range of vehicles. When shopping at Walmart, you can find product labels that specify which vehicles they're suitable for, making your selection easier.

Prediluted coolant comes ready to use, so you can pour it straight in without mixing. It's a 50/50 blend of coolant and water. Concentrate coolant, on the other hand, needs to be mixed with water before adding it to your engine—typically 50% coolant and 50% water, unless your vehicle manual says otherwise. If you want a quick top-off or a simple refill, prediluted is more convenient. If you prefer to control the mix, go with concentrate. Read the product label for specific instructions.

Coolant change intervals vary based on your vehicle and the type of coolant used.

• Some extended-life coolants are designed to last several years, but it's a good idea to check your owner's manual for the recommended service interval.
• Regularly inspect your coolant level and condition—if it's cloudy or rusty, it may be time for a flush, even if you're within the normal replacement period.

Mixing different coolants can sometimes lead to reduced performance or unwanted chemical reactions, especially if they use different base formulations. It's best to use the same type and color of coolant specified in your vehicle's manual. If you need to mix types in an emergency, try to stick with universal, compatible coolants. Afterward, flush the system and refill with the correct coolant when possible for optimal performance and vehicle safety.

Your vehicle may need coolant service if you notice:

• Engine temperature running higher than normal
• Visible leaks or puddles under the car
• Coolant warning lights or unusual dashboard alerts
• Low coolant level in the reservoir
