Clam Digging(399)

Clam digging is often just called "clamming." It refers to the activity of searching for and harvesting clams from sandy beaches, tidal flats, or riverbeds. People use tools like clam rakes, shovels, or even their hands to dig in the sand and find clams. Clamming is a popular outdoor activity for families and seafood lovers, and it’s important to check local regulations before heading out, as rules can vary by location and season.

The amount you can earn from clamming depends on several factors, including local regulations, the type of clams, and whether you’re clamming for personal use or commercial purposes. Most recreational clammers do it for fun or to enjoy fresh seafood at home, not for profit. Commercial clamming may require special permits and is regulated to protect clam populations. If you’re interested in selling clams, check with local authorities for licensing and income guidelines.

Clam digging rules in Washington state can change from year to year, so it’s important to stay updated. Regulations may include limits on the number of clams you can collect, required permits, approved digging locations, and open seasons. Some areas may also have restrictions to protect wildlife or public health. For the latest information, visit the official state fish and wildlife website or contact local authorities before planning your trip.

The best tool for digging clams often depends on the type of beach and clams you’re after. Common options include:

• Clam rakes: Great for sandy beaches and shallow digging.
• Clam shovels: Useful for deeper digging or harder-packed sand.
• Mesh sifters: Help separate clams from sand and debris.

Look for tools with sturdy handles and rust-resistant materials for durability. Many clamming tools are designed to be lightweight and easy to carry for a day at the beach.

Keeping your clam digging tools clean helps them last longer and work better. Here’s a simple way to clean them after use:

1. Rinse tools with fresh water to remove sand and salt.
2. Use a brush to scrub away any stuck debris.
3. Dry thoroughly to prevent rust, especially on metal parts.
4. Store in a dry place until your next trip.

Regular cleaning can help prevent corrosion and keep your gear ready for your next clamming adventure.
