Spotting chinch bugs can be tricky, but there are a few signs to look for:

• Patchy, yellowing grass: Chinch bugs often cause irregular brown or yellow patches that spread over time.
• Dry appearance: Damaged areas may look drought-stressed even if you’re watering regularly.
• Visible bugs: Part the grass near the edge of a damaged spot and look for tiny, black-and-white insects moving quickly.

If you’re unsure, try placing a coffee can (with both ends removed) into the soil, fill it with water, and see if bugs float to the surface. This can help confirm their presence before choosing a control method.

Timing is important for effective chinch bug control. The best time to treat is usually during late spring through summer, when chinch bugs are most active and feeding on your lawn. Applying insect control products early in the infestation can help minimize damage. Always follow the instructions on your chosen product for safe and effective application, and consider treating again if you notice continued activity later in the season.

Many chinch bug control products are designed for use in home lawns, but it’s important to read and follow all label directions carefully. Most products recommend keeping pets and children off treated areas until the application has dried or settled, which can vary depending on the product type. Always store products out of reach and use only as directed to help keep your family and pets safe.

Applying granules is pretty straightforward:

1. Spread evenly: Use a lawn spreader to distribute the granules over the affected area, following the coverage instructions on the package.
2. Water in: Lightly water your lawn after application to help activate the product and move it into the soil where chinch bugs live.
3. Keep off until dry: Wait until the treated area is dry before allowing people or pets back on the lawn.

Always wear gloves and wash your hands after handling lawn care products.

Along with using insect control products, a few lawn care habits can help reduce chinch bug problems:

• Mow at the right height: Avoid cutting your grass too short, as taller grass can shade out bugs.
• Water deeply but infrequently: Healthy lawns are less likely to suffer severe damage.
• Remove thatch: Thatch buildup can provide shelter for chinch bugs, so consider dethatching if needed.

Combining these practices with targeted treatments can help keep your lawn looking its best.
