About Child Instruments
Which instruments are appropriate for younger children?
Consider your child's size, motor skill development and personality. Toddlers and preschoolers can develop their motor skills and sense of rhythm by tapping their hands on a drum or playing the tambourine or triangle. Elementary schoolers may be ready to try the guitar or a woodwind instrument like the recorder.
How can I choose a guitar for my child?
If your child is under 6, try a mini toy guitar. Children ages 6 to 12 may find a ukulele or 3/4-size guitar more comfortable to play. Ages 12 and up can usually play a full-size guitar.
Will I need to buy any accessories?
Many instruments come with everything your child needs to start playing. Guitar players may appreciate a guitar strap for comfort and a few picks for playing. Whatever instrument you choose, consider picking up a few practice books or a guide that teaches children how to read music.
