Sewing thread and yarn serve different purposes in crafting. Sewing thread is typically thinner and stronger, designed for stitching fabrics together by hand or with a sewing machine. It’s great for repairs, garment construction, and quilting. Yarn is thicker and softer, making it ideal for knitting, crocheting, and weaving projects like scarves, blankets, and hats. When choosing between them, consider your project’s needs—thread for seams and structure, yarn for creating fabric or decorative elements.

Choosing the right thread depends on your project type and fabric.

• For general sewing, all-purpose polyester thread works well with most fabrics.
• For quilting or embroidery, you might want specialty threads for added strength or shine.
• If you’re working with delicate or stretchy fabrics, look for threads designed for those materials.

Yes, bulk thread can be used for hand sewing as long as it’s compatible with your fabric and needle. Bulk packs are a great way to stock up if you sew often or have multiple projects. Just make sure the thread isn’t too thick for your needle or fabric, and consider using a thread conditioner to help prevent tangling. Bulk thread is especially handy for large projects or group activities like crafting classes.

Proper storage helps keep your thread and yarn in good condition.

• Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and weakening.
• Use clear bins or organizers to keep colors and types separated and easy to find.
• For thread, consider a thread rack or box to avoid tangling.
• For yarn, keep skeins or balls in zippered bags or baskets to protect from dust and pets.

Tangling can be frustrating, but a few simple steps can help.

• Cut thread to manageable lengths—too long can lead to knots.
• Use a thread conditioner or beeswax to reduce friction.
• Thread your needle carefully and avoid twisting the thread as you sew.
• Keep your hands and workspace clean to prevent snags.
