Play sand and builder’s sand serve different purposes. Play sand is specially washed, screened, and often kiln-dried to remove impurities, making it safe and soft for kids’ sandboxes and sensory play. Builder’s sand is typically used for construction projects like paving or mixing with cement. It may contain small stones or minerals and isn’t processed for play safety. If you’re filling a sandbox or sensory bin, look for sand labeled as play sand for peace of mind and a smoother texture.

It’s best to use sand specifically labeled as play sand for sandboxes.

• Play sand is processed to remove dust, debris, and sharp particles, making it safer for children’s hands and skin.
• Builder’s sand may contain materials not intended for play and can be rougher in texture.

Keeping sandbox sand clean helps maintain a fun and safe play space.

1. Cover the sandbox when not in use to keep out debris and animals.
2. Rake the sand regularly to remove leaves or foreign objects.
3. Replace the sand every year or as needed, especially if it becomes dirty or wet for long periods.
4. Encourage kids to wash hands before and after play.

Builder’s sand is often used as a base or joint filler for paver projects.

• It helps create a stable, level surface for laying pavers.
• After placing the pavers, sand can be swept into the joints to lock them in place.

The amount of sand you’ll need depends on the size and depth of your sandbox.

• Measure the length, width, and desired depth in feet.
• Multiply these numbers to get the cubic feet needed (length × width × depth).
• Most bags list how many cubic feet they cover, so divide your total by the coverage per bag.
