Setting up a breeding box for betta fish is straightforward. First, rinse the box with water, avoiding any soaps or chemicals. Attach the suction cups or hang-on mechanism to secure the box inside your aquarium. Place separation panels if needed, especially if you're housing more than one betta or fry. Fill the box with water from your main tank to maintain temperature and chemistry. Finally, gently transfer your bettas or fry into the box. Always monitor for stress and make sure the box is positioned to allow proper water flow.

For betta breeding, a tank between 1.5 and 3 gallons is commonly used, as it offers enough space for mating and fry development while keeping babies safe. Smaller tanks can be ideal for isolating fry or for compact breeding setups, but don't overcrowd. Choose a tank with good water flow and easy access for feeding and cleaning.

• Keep in mind: Larger tanks can support more fish, while smaller tanks are best for a single pair or fry.

Protecting fry right after breeding is important. Use a dedicated breeding box or nursery to isolate them from adult fish—many aquarium kits offer mesh or clear acrylic boxes that prevent bigger fish from accessing fry. Make sure the box is placed where it receives gentle water flow and monitor for temperature stability.

1. Feed the fry specially formulated food.
2. Check water quality regularly to avoid health issues.

Baby bettas, known as fry, need small, nutrient-rich food that's easy to digest. Many fish food brands have pellets or powder designed for fry, often labeled as "complete nutrition" and "color boost." Avoid feeding adult food, as fry may struggle with size. Stock specialized fry food when planning your breeding setup so you can offer regular feedings for healthy growth.

Key features to look for in a breeding box include secure suction cups or floating designs to keep it stable, clear panels for easy monitoring, and separation chambers for isolating different sizes or species. Mesh sides are great for water flow, while a removable lid makes feeding and cleaning simpler. Safe materials and sturdy construction reduce risk for your aquatic pets and make maintenance less stressful.
