Popularity often depends on what you’re looking for in a backgammon set. Many shoppers choose sets with sturdy construction, easy-to-carry cases, and clear markings on the board. Portable and folding sets are favorites for travel, while larger wooden boards are often picked for home use. Combo sets that include backgammon with other games are also a hit for families. Checking customer reviews and ratings on Walmart’s site can help you see what others enjoy most.

The "8 9 12 rule" is a guideline some players use to decide on opening moves in backgammon. It refers to moving your checkers to points 8, 9, or 12, depending on your dice roll. This strategy can help you build a stronger position early in the game, but it’s just one of many approaches. Players often adapt their moves based on the flow of the game and their opponent’s strategy. If you’re new to backgammon, experimenting with different openings can help you find what works best for you.

In backgammon, a solid opening move can set the tone for the rest of the game. Many players like to split their back checkers and advance their builders, depending on the dice roll. For example, if you roll a 6-5, moving one checker from your 24-point to your 13-point is a common choice. There’s no single "best" move, as the right opening often depends on your playing style and strategy. Practicing different openings can help you discover what feels most effective for you.

Choosing the right backgammon set depends on how and where you plan to play. Here are a few tips:

• For travel, look for compact or roll-up sets that are easy to carry.
• For home use, larger wooden or deluxe boards offer a classic experience.
• For families, combo sets with multiple games can add variety.
• Consider storage—folding boards with built-in compartments keep pieces organized.
