If you don't have a trivet handy, there are a few household items that can help protect your counters or table from hot pots and pans:

• Thick kitchen towels or oven mitts: Folded towels or mitts can act as a heat barrier in a pinch.
• Wooden cutting boards: These can handle moderate heat and provide a sturdy surface.
• Cork coasters: If they're large enough, cork coasters can help with smaller dishes.

Just be sure whatever you use is heat-resistant and won't melt or scorch. Always check the item's material before placing anything hot on it.

While hot pads and trivets both protect surfaces from heat, they serve slightly different purposes:

• Hot pads: Usually made from fabric or silicone, hot pads are flexible and often used to handle hot cookware or as a quick barrier under a dish.
• Trivets: Typically more rigid and designed specifically to sit on tables or countertops, trivets come in materials like cork, wood, silicone, or metal. They're intended to stay put and support heavier pots or pans.

Choosing between them depends on whether you need something for handling hot items or for protecting your surfaces long-term.

Trivets can be a handy addition to any kitchen. They help prevent heat damage to countertops and dining tables by creating a barrier between hot cookware and your surfaces. This can extend the life of your furniture and keep your kitchen looking its best. Plus, many trivets are designed to be decorative, so they can add a touch of style when serving food directly at the table. If you cook or serve hot dishes often, a trivet can make cleanup easier and help avoid unsightly burn marks.

Trivets come in a variety of materials, each with its own benefits:

• Silicone: Flexible, heat-resistant, and easy to clean. Great for non-slip grip.
• Cork: Lightweight and gentle on surfaces, cork trivets are effective for moderate heat.
• Wood: Durable and stylish, wooden trivets work well for most hot dishes but should be kept dry.
• Metal or cast iron: Extremely sturdy and can handle high heat, though they may need rubber feet to prevent scratching.

Consider your kitchen style and how you'll use your trivet to pick the best material for your needs.

Cleaning a silicone trivet is simple and convenient:

1. Rinse off any food or spills under warm water.
2. Wash with mild dish soap and a soft sponge or cloth.
3. For stubborn stains, let it soak in soapy water for a few minutes before scrubbing gently.
4. Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry.

Most silicone trivets are also dishwasher safe, so you can pop them on the top rack for an easy clean. Always check the care instructions that come with your trivet for best results.
