Perfect fit

This part fit perfectly on my skeg, even though it had been previously damaged. Simply slid it on, tapped into place with a rubber mallet, drilled the 2 holes need to secure the guard, and locked it down with the supplied allen wrench. Done in under 10 minutes.

It's a pain trying to find the right one ...

This is the one that fits a 40 HP 1995 Yamaha. It goes on at an angle (rake from front to back, higher in front of skeg, lower in back -- not cocked sideways) straight and tight. My skeg was damaged and re-shaped sometime in the distant past so that may be why it sits like it does. It's about 3/8ths of an inch higher up the skeg on the leading edge than on the trailing edge but I can live with that. It went on very easily, only took me about 10 minutes to install once I had all the tools ready to go. I probably could have had it on faster but you'll want to be very careful that you have this fitted as well as possible before drilling the holes to mount it. This is a "get it right the first time or you'll be sorry" situation, so I tinkered around with it to be absolutely sure it was in the very best possible position before drilling any holes. It comes with two lengths of round headed screws (total 4) and two round headed sleeve "nuts" (they're not really nuts, it's a threaded shank) that you'll want to check for fit BEFORE you start the threads and tighten them down. The screws have locktite on them so once you put them on they're not coming off without considerable effort and fuss. Where this fit on my skeg on my motor was with the shorter screws. Included are two Allen Key wrenches so you can hold and tighten from both sides. As usual for this kind of application the wrenches fit but are not made of a good, hard steel so they'll strip fairly easy. I used my own good steel T-handled wrenches and got 'em really tight before the locktite set. If there's a failure point in this installation the cheap, soft Allen Keys are it. It looks good and gives my prop about 2 1/2 - 3 inches of protection on the bottom. Walmart doesn't have the whole list of motors these skeg protectors will fit and it was a real hassle trying to find the correct model for my motor. The best I can tell you is to hunt around the internet, eventually you'll run across a full listing of what part numbers fit what motors. I found one on the manufacturer's website and another on a marine dealer's site. Even then I wasn't completely sure that I got the right one until I actually slid it over the skeg on my motor. Overall I'm happy with this, I do wish it had gone on without the minor slant but I needed this so I'll live with it. I'd have given it 5 stars if it had fit perfectly and the Allen keys that come with it had been better material. It took one star off my review for those factors and the difficulty in finding the correct part number.
