Trailing vinca varieties are known for their ability to cascade over edges and create lush ground cover. These include types like Vinca minor (also called periwinkle or myrtle) and some specialty cultivars with variegated foliage. Trailing vinca is popular for hanging baskets, borders, and areas where you want foliage to spill over. If you're shopping for trailing vinca, look for descriptions mentioning 'trailing,' 'groundcover,' or 'spreading' habits to find the right fit for your garden.

Trailing vinca varieties can be either annual or perennial, depending on the type and your local climate.

• Perennial vinca (like Vinca minor) usually returns each year in zones where winters aren’t too harsh.
• Annual vinca may not survive cold temperatures but can be replanted each spring.

Trailing vinca is designed to spread horizontally and cascade, making it ideal for ground cover or hanging baskets. Regular vinca (often called Madagascar periwinkle) typically grows upright and is used for bedding or container planting. The main differences are in growth habit and use: trailing types cover more ground, while upright types add height and color. Both offer attractive foliage and flowers, so choose based on your landscape needs.

Trailing vinca is well-known for its spreading habit. Once established, it can cover bare spots and fill in borders.

• It spreads by rooting along stems as they touch the soil.
• Growth rate depends on conditions like sun, soil, and watering.

Trailing vinca thrives in areas with partial to full sun and well-drained soil.

• It’s perfect for borders, slopes, hanging baskets, or as a ground cover under trees.
• Choose spots where you want foliage to cascade or fill in gaps.
