To add volume with a teasing comb, start by sectioning off the area you want to lift. Hold a small section of hair upright and gently backcomb from the middle of the strand toward the roots using short, quick strokes.

• Work in layers for a fuller look.
• Be gentle to avoid breakage.
• Finish by smoothing the top layer with the comb or a soft brush.

Using a teasing comb can help create lift and body, especially for updos or styles that need extra height.

A rat tail comb features a long, pointed handle that’s great for sectioning and parting hair, while a teasing comb usually has closely spaced teeth designed for backcombing and adding volume.

• Rat tail combs are ideal for precise styling and creating clean parts.
• Teasing combs help build texture and lift at the roots.

Some combs combine both features, making them versatile for various styling needs.

It’s generally best to use teasing combs on dry or slightly damp hair. Wet hair is more fragile and can be prone to breakage when backcombed.

• If you need to detangle wet hair, use a wide-tooth comb first.
• Wait until your hair is mostly dry before teasing for volume or styling.

This approach can help maintain hair health and reduce the risk of damage.

To clean your teasing comb, remove any hair strands first. Then, soak the comb in warm, soapy water for a few minutes.

• Use a soft brush or an old toothbrush to gently scrub between the teeth.
• Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry.

Regular cleaning helps keep your comb free of product buildup and ready for daily use.

Teasing combs can be used on most hair types, but it’s important to use gentle techniques, especially on fine or fragile hair.

• For thick or curly hair, sectioning can make teasing easier.
• For fine hair, use light strokes to avoid breakage.
