A landscape rake is a versatile tool designed for a variety of outdoor tasks. You can use it to:

• Spread and level soil, gravel, or sand when preparing garden beds or lawns.
• Remove debris like rocks, sticks, and leaves from your yard or driveway.
• Dethatch lawns by pulling up dead grass and thatch layers.
• Clear brush or light vegetation from larger areas, especially with tow-behind or tractor models.

Landscape rakes come in different sizes and styles, so you can find one that fits your specific yard or garden needs.

While both tools help maintain your yard, they serve different purposes:

• Landscape rakes have wider heads and more tines, making them ideal for moving larger amounts of material, clearing debris, and prepping soil over big areas.
• Leveling rakes are designed with flat, smooth heads to help create an even surface, especially when spreading topsoil or sand.

If you're looking to clear and prep land, go for a landscape rake. For finishing touches and getting a perfectly flat surface, a leveling rake is a better fit.

The depth a landscape rake reaches depends on its design and how much pressure you apply. Most landscape rakes are intended for surface work and typically reach a few inches into the soil. They're great for:

• Removing surface debris like rocks and sticks
• Spreading and leveling soil without digging too deep

If you need to break up compacted soil or dig deeper, you might need a different tool, like a garden tiller. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for safe and effective use.

A landscape rake can help pull up some shallow-rooted weeds and loosen the soil surface, making it easier to remove unwanted plants. However, it's most effective for clearing debris, leaves, and thatch rather than fully removing established or deep-rooted weeds. For tougher weeds, you may need to use additional tools or methods to get the best results.

Choosing the right size landscape rake depends on your yard and the tasks you have in mind:

• Small yards or tight spaces: Go for a rake with a narrower head for better control.
• Large open areas: A wider rake covers more ground, making big jobs quicker.
• Tow-behind models: These are great for tractors or ATVs and work well for clearing large plots or driveways.

Think about your storage space and how much weight you’re comfortable handling, too. Adjustable handles and lightweight materials can make the job easier.
