A fiber modem, sometimes called an optical network terminal (ONT), connects your home to a fiber optic internet service. It converts light signals from the fiber optic cable into digital data your devices can use. Here's how it works:

• Receives high-speed internet signals through fiber optic lines
• Converts those signals into data for your router or computer
• Acts as the gateway between your internet provider and your home network

Fiber modems are designed to handle the fast speeds and reliability that fiber internet offers, making them essential for this type of connection.

Not all modems work with fiber internet. Fiber connections require a specific type of modem, often called an ONT, that’s compatible with your provider’s technology. Here’s what you should know:

• Check with your internet provider to see which models are supported
• Standard cable or DSL modems won’t work with fiber lines
• Some providers supply the required modem as part of your service

Always confirm compatibility before purchasing a modem for fiber internet to avoid setup issues.

In some cases, you can purchase your own fiber optic modem, but it depends on your internet provider’s policies. Consider these points:

• Some providers require you to use their supplied equipment
• Others allow compatible third-party modems or ONTs
• Buying your own can offer more control, but always check for compatibility and support

Contact your provider before buying to ensure your chosen device will work with their fiber service.

If you’re switching to fiber internet, you’ll likely need a modem designed for fiber connections, not a standard cable or DSL modem. Here’s how to find out:

• Ask your internet provider what equipment is required
• Look for terms like "fiber modem" or "ONT" in your provider’s setup instructions
• Check your current modem’s specs—if it doesn’t mention fiber, it probably won’t work

Using the right modem ensures you get the speeds and reliability fiber internet offers.

When picking a fiber modem, focus on compatibility, speed, and features that match your needs. Here are some tips:

• Make sure the modem is approved by your internet provider
• Check that it supports the internet speeds you’re paying for
• Consider extra features like built-in Wi-Fi, multiple Ethernet ports, or parental controls

Reading customer reviews and checking the product details can help you make an informed choice for your home network.
