Choosing the right size depends on how you plan to use your backpacking cup. If you mainly want a cup for coffee or tea, something around 12 to 18 ounces is usually enough. For meals like soups or oatmeal, a larger cup—up to 24 ounces—can be handy. Consider how much space and weight you want to carry, too. Many backpackers prefer lightweight, compact cups that fit easily in their pack or nest inside other cookware. Think about your typical trip style and pick a size that matches your needs without adding unnecessary bulk.

Stainless steel cups are a popular choice for camping because they're durable, resistant to rust, and can handle both hot and cold drinks. They don't retain flavors or odors, making them versatile for different beverages. Plus, they're easy to clean and can withstand rough use outdoors. While they might be a bit heavier than some plastic or titanium options, many campers appreciate their sturdiness and long-lasting performance. If weight is a top concern, you might also look at ultralight materials, but stainless steel is a solid all-around pick for most outdoor adventures.

Keeping your backpacking cup clean while outdoors is simple with a few steps:

• Rinse the cup with water right after use to prevent residue from sticking.
• Use a small amount of biodegradable soap and a soft cloth or sponge if available.
• If soap isn't an option, scrub with sand or leaves and rinse thoroughly.
• Let the cup air dry before packing it away to avoid odors or mildew.

Always follow Leave No Trace principles by disposing of wastewater at least 200 feet from natural water sources.

Some backpacking cups, especially those made from stainless steel or titanium, can be used for basic cooking tasks like boiling water or heating soup. Check if your cup is designed for direct heat—look for sturdy handles and a shape that sits well on a camp stove. Avoid using cups with plastic parts or insulation layers over open flames. Always monitor your cup while heating to prevent spills or burns. For more complex meals, a dedicated pot or pan might be more practical, but a durable cup can handle simple cooking needs on the go.

Many backpacking cups feature handles—sometimes foldable for easy packing—and some include lids to help keep drinks hot and prevent spills. Lids can also double as small plates or strainers, depending on the design. If having a lid or a specific handle style is important to you, check the product details before buying. These features can add convenience and versatility, especially for hot drinks or when cooking small meals. Walmart offers a variety of options, so you can find a cup that matches your preferences for your next adventure.
