Buying a new toaster is a bit of a pig in a poke. After our decades-old toaster stopped accepting bread, I went to the CR site to study test rankings. I was not happy with anything I found. Off to Walmart! Scrolling through the myriad choices, this little red number caught my eye, even though I am moderately color-blind. Among the 1-star reviews, a woman planned to return her faulty model but would reorder because it was just so darn cute. My wife also thought it was cute. It is now ensconced on our kitchen counter and is just darn cute. A little dial on the front (that looks like a snout) has settings from 0->6. It toasts regular bread to our satisfaction. We also keep sliced bread in the freezer to maintain freshness. Now we can put a frozen slice in the toaster and push the small button on the right to defrost and toast. Works like a charm! However, on the left, the bagel button baffles. When it is depressed, only the sliced surfaces are toasted. The manual says to put the two halves with the sliced surfaces facing inward. My wife said to put the sliced surfaces facing outward. We argued. She won. The manual is wrong. How can that be? Is our model wired backward? Is the manual for another model? Do the design engineers not talk to the technical writers? Did a translation to English get botched? Whatever the reason, we like it, now that we know how it works. You can get away with stuff when you are cute.
