Do not hold or press the handle bar as that won't work. After it's extended you can then raise the handle and proceed. Would this work for transport of base drum or other drums & related equipment, even if multiple trips were required? I bought the hand truck for monthly moving of speakers and sound control consoles, cables ... etc. We use several small SUVs to transport the equipment.
