We went for the retractable gate as it is much better than having a swinging section or bottom rails on stairs. We have no wall on side of the stairs which limited our choice of gates. There are thick skirting boards at the bottom. This was resolved by using thick timber boards to fill the gap and ensure the posts are vertical. Accordingly these now fit perfectly and are very secure. The gates are easy to use, and don't get in the way when we can to keep them open. Very happy with them.
