Old Hickory Knife Gift Set

this is a great knife set stays nice and sharp for a long time after sharpening, the handles are great to grip and make cutting easy. a great set and a great buy

I first learned about Old Hickory when I bought the boning knife in a Walmart (they used to carry them) to use as a weeding knife. I used it for a couple of years and then it sat in the tool shed for almost 18 more years. A few months ago, I stumbled onto it and cleaned it up (I had oiled it so it didn't corrode). For the first time, I decided to put an edge on it. I could shave with it (and did shave hair on my arms). I decided to use it as a kitchen knife and was instantly impressed with its sharpness and usability. Wind forward a few weeks and I now have the whole set. I wanted a knife block so I could store them in our cupboard and within easy reach when cooking so I bought a $20 block from Amazon and now it is part of the kitchen. The only knife I am not sure about is the paring knife since it is somewhat small and we have lots of those. There is no bread knife but the larger knives still work fine for cutting fresh bread. Take care of them! They are not stainless but a light coating of vegetable oil (very light) after use keeps them perfect. The one that was in the tool shed for so many years had a few dark spots but was completely usable and it had only been squirted with WD-40 once... 18 years ago. These are forged steel and are not finished to shiny perfection. The look is still pleasing to me since it makes them appear like old timey kithcen knives... that are fairly sharp as delivered but a sharpening steel makes them perfect.
