I normally wear a women's 8 M to 9 depending on the shape of the shoe. I have another similar pair of these and I found a women's 8 to be a little too short in the foot bed because of the shape of the toe. If you normally wear a lady's 8 get a 9 for sure, these are designed as unisex thus I think that's why the size is a little bit off. I ordered the 9. Next thing is the height of the shoe at the arch might be a little short when you first get them, they will stretch for sure but at first it will be a little hard to get the velcro to reach over the top of your foot and attach on the other side. The sole of the shoe has some thick padding and it also has a removable rubber insert. The soles of these are fairly thick but I would not walk anyplace you're likely to step on a nail because it will probably go right through the sole. I wear mostly slip on style shoes because my bad back prevents me from bending over easily to put on shoes, it's become quite the operation to get a shoe on that must be tied or otherwise secured and not just slip on. I wouldn't buy these for anyone whose back limits their ability to bend over very much. Once you get them on they're pretty comfortable I just wouldn't recommend them for outside if there's any danger of stepping on anything pointy that might be on the ground.
