The advantages of using an open-top cup over a duckbill/straw cup as a first cup are. 🫧 When preparing for speech to occur, babies need to learn how to lift the tip of their tongue and also use their lips, tongue, jaw and cheek muscles flexibly 🫧 Opening a sippy cup promotes the development of these oral-motor skills 🫧 During breastfeeding and bottle-feeding, your baby's tongue is positioned at the bottom of the mouth with the tip of the tongue forward above the lower gums, in the same way that swallowing is done when using a sippy cup. In a mature swallow, the tongue should be pressed firmly against the palate, slightly behind the incisors, and the rest of the tongue pulled into the palate.
