I volunteer at a city shelter in NJ and I foster dogs and pups that are in dire need of TLC before they can be adopted out. Recently, over 50 dogs were brought into the small shelter, rescued from a breeder who had stashed dogs in abandoned buildings, in horrendous conditions.
One of the most critically ill dogs was a Cane Corso pup, who I've named Primo, because he was named Dog #1 on his intake sheet.
Primo and his partner were clearly starved and dehydrated (and suffering from Giardia and whipworms.) I was warned that he was very quiet and might be suffering from neurological problems as a result of severe dehydration.
After 5 days in the hospital, on IV, Primo was released to me with instructions to feed him very small amounts, 4-6 times a day, to avoid the potentially fatal “refeeding syndrome.”
They also sent me home with cans of “Prescription” food. The ingredient list was a joke. By-products and cheap fillers — a bunch of junk that didn't look like anything I'd want to start a puppy on!
It wasn't until I slowly transitioned him over to the moistened Puppy Patties that I began to see real improvement in his energy level and alertness. He began acting like a typical puppy!! It was a joy to see him chewing up wee wee pads and stealing sandals!
For the first time, his stool looked normal.
It's incredibly satisfying to rehab dogs and puppies, and it's amazing to see, first-hand, the very real effect that a quality, nutrient-dense food can have.
It's a joy to be able to rehab neglected dogs and puppies, and Stella & Chewy is a huge reason for the success I've had.
