KETOSTIX results should never be used as the sole basis for adjusting insulin dosage. Urine Test for Ketone (Acetoacetic Acid) The strips provide a fast, convenient way of testing urine for the presence and concentration of acetoacetic acid (ketone). This substance when found in the urine provides information on carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Acetoacetic acid can be found in the urine from diabetics and is more commonly referred to as a ketone body. Use of Ketostix Reagent Strips can alert you and your doctor or diabetes educator to changes in your condition for which adjustments in your diet and/or medication may be needed. A useful, easy test to track your ketone level.
I am on a keto diet so tracking my ketone level is important to me. It is very easy to use. You can either place it into a container of fresh urine or just urinate on the strip over the toilet. Wait 15 seconds and compare it to the chart on the side of the bottle where it reveals your ketone level. Make sure your time it for 15 seconds because if you wait longer than that the color will continue to darken. I test the same time each day twice a week and it gives me a guide about how good I have been avoiding carbohydrates. I did notice that when I tested on the day after I had a couple of pieces of pizza the ketone level was lower. So it does work.
