Since the Medela breastpumps come with size 24 breastshields, having the actual appropriate size for your comfort and pumping efficiency is ideal. I began my breastpumping journey a week after the birth of our second child. I met with a nurse at our hospital's lactation center, and she not only informed me that I could probably get free breastpumping supplies through my health insurance, but she could tell me what size medela breastshields would fit me best. She put me through a pumping session and found I needed two different sized breastshields, which makes this product perfect because I can select and buy exactly what I needed. I basically got to try out the shields with medical feedback from the nurse before purchasing them. I knew exactly what I needed and how they would work for me.

After struggling with pumping only a total of 1-2oz per session, I began researching how to increase my output. I came across and image of proper/improper flange fit and was startled to realize when pumping, my nipples resembled the exact same as the ones in the picture of flanges being too big. I immediately ordered the smaller size, 21mm. I like how the shield itself is smaller, not just the nipple portion. Since I have a smaller bust, this allows me to squeeze more of my breast when hand expressing. Overall, the smaller, more properly fitted flange as well as hand expressing allowed me to pump about an ounce more total breast milk on the first try!
