They allow home-brewers to adjust and predict the integrity of their recipe by providing accurate readings of the sugar level as well as specific gravity. Triple Scale Hydrometer measures SG, °Plato/Brix, Potential Alcohol
A hydrometer is used to determine the specific gravity (SG) of your beer, this is a measurement of sugar in a liquid. This measurement can also be determined in two other scales °Plato/Brix or Potential Alcohol. The specific gravity is used to determine the alcohol level of your beer and to monitor the fermentation progress. A reading must be taken from cooled wort or wine must BEFORE fermentation, and a second reading is taken AFTER fermentation the difference between the two readings is then plugged into an equation (or online calculator) to determine the alcohol content in your beer or wine. A must have for anybody making wine or beer at home!!

How to Determine ABV from SG readings for Beer & Wine:

1. Take reading before fermentation (This is your Original Gravity OG) (wort temperature should be a s close to 60°F as possible, or a temperature correction must be made)
2. Take a second reading after fermentation (This is your Final Gravity FG) (at 60°F)
3. Subtract the second reading from the first (OG-FG)
4. Multiply your total by 131 (OG-FG) x 131=ABV
5. Example (OG=1.080) (FG=1.011). 1.080 - 1.011 = 0.069 x 131 = 9.039%ABV

Proof & Tralle Hydrometer For Distilled Alcohol and Spirits
A Proof and Tralle hydrometer directly measures the alcohol content of distilled alcohol or spirits with a specific gravity less than 1.000. It is unlike standard beer and wine hydrometers because it is calibrated to give a direct reading of actual alcohol content and not the density of the liquid. This hydrometer provides 2 scales of measurement which are Proof (the US International Revenue Scale for proof of spirits) and Tralle (the actual percentage of alcohol). It is calibrated to give accurate readings at 60F (15.6C) and includes a chart that provides the adjustments needed when using it at different temperatures.

To use the hydrometer, simply fill a test tube with the liquid sample. The plastic storage container that the hydrometer is supplied with can also be used as the testing container however a test tube with a wide base provides additional benefits. The volume of the liquid must be large enough to completely suspend the hydrometer. Place the hydrometer in the liquid, make sure that it is completely suspended and that there are no air bubbles or other obstructions. The result is determined on the hydrometer scale at the surface of the liquid.

Notes

• A Proof and Tralle Hydrometer is meant to provide a general indication of alcohol content. A very precise measurement requires the use of more specialized equipment.
• A Proof and Tralle Hydrometer is designed to only test 'pure' distilled spirits such as whiskey and vodka. It is not meant to be used with liquors that have high concentrations of sugar or other ingredients such as Rum, Kahlua, Jagermeister, cordials and liqueurs.
