Machete [Widescreen] (DVD)

Danny Trejo makes this movie, but the other star power is amazingly strong. I was surprised at how good of an actor Steven Seagal can be when he really tries. Jessica Alba is terrific, as is Jeff Fahey. Cheech Marin is another stand-out role, and the Crazy Babysitter Twins and the Doctor from Planet Terror are an extra treat. The action makes this film extra fun. The bouncing Mexican cars in the battle scene are a hoot! The dialogue is often so trite it is hilarious (and it is meant to be). The pro-Mexican theme may turn some anti-illegal alien folks off (I have a cousin who refuses to watch this--his loss!), but it is a terrific movie, perfect for a fun night in front of the TV with your favorite snack and libation. It would never win an Oscar, but to me Oscar-winning movies are generally boring. Give me a good Rodriguez film over a "serious drama" any day!
